Parenting in an Online World

Being a parent can be hard. But getting support doesn’t have to be.

YouParent is sponsoring free, public presentations and discussions designed to help parents and others caring for middle and high school aged youth, learn more about what is changing around drug and alcohol use and how to support our kids to make healthy decisions in our increasingly complex world. Our April event is:

Parenting in an Online World

with Eric Thompson, Co-Founder and Director of Leadership Development at CivilSchools

April 10th, 2017 from 6:30-8:00pm
Lyman C. Hunt Middle School Library, 1364 North Ave, Burlington
This is a free event. Childcare will be available.

Welcome to parenting in Web 2.0. The Internet, social networking, cell phones, video games and other digital innovations are game changers in our work and family life. We see examples in our kids every day as they multi-task, play on-line video games, text their friends and post on their social media pages. Technology is changing the ways that kids learn and socialize. We have arrived in the digital world without a map or compass, leaving many parents struggling to keep up. However, life’s challenges can produce some of life’s greatest lessons.

Eric Thompson is a dynamic national speaker who has addressed a wide range of audiences on topics related to bullying, internet safety and raising resilient and compassionate young people in the digital age. He’ll focus on both the benefits and things to watch out for for kids growing up in a digital world. The evening will focus on the pro-social behaviors that will help your family not only successfully handle cyber-bullying, sexting, and other negative elements of the online world but how to design a plan that prepares them to thrive within it.

Everyone is welcome at this open and free event. Parents of students at Hunt Middle School are especially encouraged to attend! Hunt Middle School students will have a school assembly with Eric Thompson on April 10th focusing on being a student UPstander rather than bystander. You’ll hear some of the same things your students learned during the day and have something to talk to them about when you get home!
